Long-range persistence in climatological and hydrological time series: analysis, modeling and application to drought hazard assessment

چکیده
We present power spectra of time-series data for tree ring width chronologies, atmospheric temperatures, river discharges and precipitation averaged over hundreds of stations worldwide. The average power spectrum S for each of these phenomena is found to have a power-law dependence on frequency with exponent -l/2: S(f) xf-‘/‘. An advection-diffusion model of the vertical transport of heat and water vapor in the atmosphere is presented as a first-order model of climatic and hydrological variability. The model generates variability with the observed spectrum. The model is validated with a correlation anaiysis of temperature and water vapor concentration measurements from the TIROS operational vertical sounder (TO%). Drought frequency analyses based on synthetic lognormal streamflows with the above power spectrum are presented. We show that the presence of long memory as implied by the power-law power spectrum has a significant effect on the likelihood of extended droughts compared with the drought hazard implied from standard autoregressive models with short memory.

prediction of hydrological variables is a highly effective tool in water resource management. One of the important tools for modeling hydrological processes is the use of time series modeling and analysis. River series production series can be used by time series models in various studies such as drought, flood, reservoir systems design and many other purposes For this purpose, monthly flow dat...

Hydrological drought is defined by long-term decrease in levels and flows of water bodies. The task of this paper is to analyze and identify statistical trends of low flows in streams in the eastern Slovakia. Methodology for evaluating hydrological drought is based on statistical analysis of observed low stream flows at chosen river stations – annual and seasonal. Mann-Kendall statistical test ...

Global climate models suggest an increase in evapotranspiration, changing storm tracks, and moisture delivery in many parts of the world, which are likely to cause more prolonged and severe drought, yet the weakness of climate models in modeling persistence of hydroclimatic variables and the uncertainties associated with regional climate projections mean that impact assessments based on climate...
متن کاملForecasting flow discharge through time series analysis using SARIMA model for drought conditions, a case study of Jamishan River
Nowadays, water supply is more limited and providing water is more difficult due to increasing population and demand for water. Thus, due to rainfall shortage and impacts of drought, the need for forecasting monthly and annual rainfall and flow discharge through time series analysis is acutely felt. One of the key assumption in time series is their static condition. However, hydrological time s...
متن کاملUsing GADI index to determine the drought and the dry areas in Kerman province
Aridity as a spatial concept and drought as a temporal concept have always been studied in different aspects as two distinct categories. However, both concepts indicate anomalies from normal condition. Several indices have been introduced to examine each of these concepts using one or more hydrological cycle’s components. Meanwhile, soil moisture and changes in its spatial and temporal va...
